Devon Libraries Centenary Collection - Part One: Fiction

  This year (2024) marks the centenary of a county library service in Devon. The first county librarian was appointed in 1924 and a county library HQ set up in Colleton Crescent. It would be a while until Exeter got a public library of its own, however. A free library had been a part of the Royal Albert Memorial Museum since its opening in 1868, but there was a need for a dedicated building to meet ever increasing need and the expanding collection. A Carnegie Trust grant was offered in 1909 for the construction of a new site, but it wasn't until 1924 that agreement was reached for a plan to build in the grounds of Rougemont House. Things didn't exactly proceed rapidly from that point. A foundation stone was laid in 1928, but it wasn't until October 1930 that the new library had its official opening. It's life was fairly short. Devon Libraries Centenary Collection: Part Two - Poetry, Plays and Non-Fiction

Well, we’ve had a look at the novels and short storie s published in 1924, the year in which the Devon Library Service was established , which can be found down in the stacks. Let's n ow turn our attention to the poetry, plays and general non-fiction published or performed in that year.   The theatrical life of the time is represented by a number of play scripts we have. 1924 was a momentous year for Noel Coward. His play The Vortex premie red at the Everyman in Hampstead in November and soon became a success , creating a scandal, such a scandal with its story of an older woman mourning her fading glamour and her close relationship with her son, a cocaine addict. Coward’s international fame was assured the following year, with a West End production of Hay Fever and a Broadway run of Easy Virtue, both plays written in 1924. Jean Rhys - From Dominica to Cheriton Fitzpaine

Back in the early days of spring, I received notice that the university were to put on an evening celebrating the life and work of Jean Rhys in the village which was her home in her latter years, Cheriton Fitzpaine. I knew something of her peripatetic life, but nothing beyond a few generalities. Clearly it was time to go sleuthing in the stacks once more. The writer later to be known as Jean Rhys was born Ella Gwendolin Rees Williams in 1890 on the island of Dominica. Dominica was one of the Windward Isles, which bracketed the Caribbean on its Eastern edge. Rhys was a member of a decaying aristocratic class, her ancestors plantation owners and therefore also slave owners. She lived in Dominca for the first 16 years of her life before moving to England in 1907. Her pronounced accent and financial insecurity, along with a strong independent spirit, made it difficult for her to fit in. This sense of marginality would be with her throughout her life.
