Jean Rhys - From Dominica to Cheriton Fitzpaine

Back in the early days of spring, I received notice that the university were to put on an evening celebrating the life and work of Jean Rhys in the village which was her home in her latter years, Cheriton Fitzpaine. I knew something of her peripatetic life, but nothing beyond a few generalities. Clearly it was time to go sleuthing in the stacks once more. The writer later to be known as Jean Rhys was born Ella Gwendolin Rees Williams in 1890 on the island of Dominica. Dominica was one of the Windward Isles, which bracketed the Caribbean on its Eastern edge. Rhys was a member of a decaying aristocratic class, her ancestors plantation owners and therefore also slave owners. She lived in Dominca for the first 16 years of her life before moving to England in 1907. Her pronounced accent and financial insecurity, along with a strong independent spirit, made it difficult for her to fit in. This sense of marginality would be with her throughout her life. Stanzas in the Stacks - Part One

One area of the library's stack collection which is particularly extensive and richly varied is its poetry selection (the 821s for English poetry, Dewey fans). There are thousands of volumes down there, containing millions of verses. They come in all shapes and sizes, from large and sumptuously illustrated editions to tiny pocket books. A miniscule collection of aphoristic Chinese verse titled Fragments of Jade may be one of the smallest books we have; its old yellow record card is actually greater in area than the cover of the book and rather spoils the otherwise exquisite aesthetic appeal of this perfectly formed object.  Elsewhere there are self-published pamphlets, limited edition small-press publications, agit-prop broadsheets, Victorian collections with beautiful colour plates revealed beneath diaphonous sheets of tissue paper, and early collections by poets who would go on to great renown, sometimes in other literary forms. Devon Libraries Centenary Collection - Part One: Fiction

  This year (2024) marks the centenary of a county library service in Devon. The first county librarian was appointed in 1924 and a county library HQ set up in Colleton Crescent. It would be a while until Exeter got a public library of its own, however. A free library had been a part of the Royal Albert Memorial Museum since its opening in 1868, but there was a need for a dedicated building to meet ever increasing need and the expanding collection. A Carnegie Trust grant was offered in 1909 for the construction of a new site, but it wasn't until 1924 that agreement was reached for a plan to build in the grounds of Rougemont House. Things didn't exactly proceed rapidly from that point. A foundation stone was laid in 1928, but it wasn't until October 1930 that the new library had its official opening. It's life was fairly short.
