Stanzas in the Stacks - Part One

One area of the library's stack collection which is particularly extensive and richly varied is its poetry selection (the 821s for English poetry, Dewey fans). There are thousands of volumes down there, containing millions of verses. They come in all shapes and sizes, from large and sumptuously illustrated editions to tiny pocket books. A miniscule collection of aphoristic Chinese verse titled Fragments of Jade may be one of the smallest books we have; its old yellow record card is actually greater in area than the cover of the book and rather spoils the otherwise exquisite aesthetic appeal of this perfectly formed object.  Elsewhere there are self-published pamphlets, limited edition small-press publications, agit-prop broadsheets, Victorian collections with beautiful colour plates revealed beneath diaphonous sheets of tissue paper, and early collections by poets who would go on to great renown, sometimes in other literary forms. Henry Williamson's Long Century

  Here’s a guest post from friend of the library Karen Hedges (whose website, including blog, you can find here ). Karen works tirelessly to promote and further the educational work of the Norman L ockyer observatory above Sidmouth, which feature d in a previous post on Norman and Lady Lockyer. Karen has also put on a number of excellent illustrated science talks in St Thomas Library, with a particular focus on the Moon. Here, however, she focusses her attention on a major saga by a Devon-based author which she got swept up in, which takes its protagonist through the turbulent history of the first half of the twentieth century. As Karen says, it's a real reading marathon, but one which she has completed. So here she is, reporting back from the finishing line for Sleuthing in the Stacks. Bernard Quaritch's Big Book Of Books

Right at the beginning of the Dewey decimal system you will come across books about books – bibliographies, library histories, publisher’s tales and so forth. It’s perhaps not surprising that a librarian such as Melvil Dewey should make books themselves the foundation of his rationalised catalogue system. If h e wanted a really firm foundation in a more literal sense, he could do worse than prop the whole edifice up on two of Bernard Quaritch’s General Catalogues of Books. These c ertainly stand out on the bottom shelf of the books on books section of the stack. There they are , two volumes bound in red leather with gilded lettering . They are almost comically broad, and I would warrant are the widest books in relation to their height that are to be found in the stack collection.
