Or Eerie Albion if you will. Perhaps even These Haunted Isles. Whatever title you wish to apply, here's a new display of stack books in Exeter Library which explores the strangeness which is never too far from the surface in these myth and magic soaked islands. Here are stone circles and barrows, ruined abbeys and old Reformation scarred churches, magical landscapes and the spirit of place, echoes of ancient rites and rituals reinvented, folklore and calendar customs, tales of the supernatural and the British surreal, ingrained eccentricity and insular oddity, druids and diviners, peasant poets and movie dreamers, homegrown mystics and visionary artists. All the variegated substrata which go to make up the many-layered matter of Britain.

Stanzas in the Stacks - Part One

One area of the library's stack collection which is particularly extensive and richly varied is its poetry selection (the 821s for English poetry, Dewey fans). There are thousands of volumes down there, containing millions of verses. They come in all shapes and sizes, from large and sumptuously illustrated editions to tiny pocket books. A miniscule collection of aphoristic Chinese verse titled Fragments of Jade may be one of the smallest books we have; its old yellow record card is actually greater in area than the cover of the book and rather spoils the otherwise exquisite aesthetic appeal of this perfectly formed object.  Elsewhere there are self-published pamphlets, limited edition small-press publications, agit-prop broadsheets, Victorian collections with beautiful colour plates revealed beneath diaphonous sheets of tissue paper, and early collections by poets who would go on to great renown, sometimes in other literary forms. Ghost Stories For Christmas, or Spectres from the Stacks

As the nights grow ever darker and we approach the shortest day (and thus the longest night) of the year, it is the season for ghost stories. For centuries, people have gathered around the hearth to tell pleasingly chilling tales of what might be lurking in the shadows beyond the flickering light. It was the Victorians who really made such tales of the supernatural a literary Christmas tradition. Mr Dickens played a major part in its establishment, of course, with the Christmas editions of the magazines he 'conducted', Household Words and All The Year Round, containing a number of ghost stories by various hands, including the great man himself. Many of these stories were written by female authors, who were able to make a living writing for the magazines and journals which proliferated in this period. Sybil and Cyril and Claude

Jenny Uglow is one of the finest, most feted biographers of British artistic and literary figures from the 18th and 19th centuries. She has written about William Hogarth, Edward Lear, Elizabeth Gaskell, George Eliot and Thomas Bewick, most of which are available in Devon Libraries (although you might have to be a bit formal in your search, asking for Jennifer Uglow). We also have a fine 5 volume edition of the complete Thomas Bewick engravings in our special collections, published by renowned Victorian bookseller Bernard Quaritch (who we may return to in a future post, since he is an interesting fellow and there are more stack stories to tell about him). Uglow's latest book takes her into the twentieth century, however, and was inspired by a lino-cut print which had hung on the family wall for years, and which she was finally drawn to investigate.
